Again: In Dan's own words:

I’m currently using a box to make Santa taller but will build a wood base with weight in the bottom which will also hold his staff off to the side.  The arms are water weenies held with shoe laces.  I do not like the lack of shoulders with this set up so I will carve foam halves and adjust the proportions of the forearm.  The tunic was attached before the arms so the arms can go through the sleeves of the robe.  

The tunic is simply a piece of material tied behind santas neck.
